Why Do You Need to Rotate Your Tires?

You may be curious as to why it’s so important to rotate tires. Because of driving habits and varying road conditions in Elizabethtown, not all tires wear at the same speed. As a result of how tires are impacted while turning, the outside edges of the front tires wear more while the rear tires wear more evenly. Over time, if your tires remain in the same position, they’ll wear down at varying rates and will need to be replaced sooner.

How Often Should Tires be Rotated?

Depending on whether you drive a FWD, RWD, or AWD vehicle, your tires will need to be rotated at different intervals. Front and rear wheel drive vehicles will generally need a tire rotation every 5,000-7,5000 miles. All-wheel drive vehicles will need to be rotated more frequently — every 3,000-5,000 miles — since all tires are being engaged and will wear faster. We always recommend that you consult your owner’s manual for more specific figures for tire rotations.

How to Rotate Your Tires at Home

If you’re curious about how to rotate your tires home, you will need the following tools: a car jack, lug nut wrench, and a set of car jacks. Once you’re all set, follow these easy steps to rotate your vehicle tires:

  1. Put your vehicle in park.
  2. Loosen the lug nuts on all four wheels, but don’t unscrew them all of the way.
  3. Lift up one wheel with a car jack and place the jack stand underneath it.
  4. Remove the tires one by one.
  5. Make sure your tires are filled to the optimal tire pressure. Once filled, you can rotate them according to the appropriate pattern for your type of tires. For FWD tires, you’ll move the front tires to the rear in the same left/right positions; rear tires that are moved to the front must be switched. For RWD vehicles, it’s the opposite. Rear tires can be moved to the front of the car in the same left/right positions; front tires moved to the rear will need to be switched.
  6. Place the tire back onto the wheel mount and screw the lug nuts on by hand as far as you can.
  7. Lower the car from the jack stands and use the lug wrench to finish tightening the nuts. It’s recommended that you work the lug nuts diagonally from one another in a star pattern to make sure they’re evenly tightened. If they aren’t tightened evenly, this can result in the brake rotor warping.
