Coolant is a fluid that transfers heat and regulates the temperature of your engine block and parts. Whether you’re driving a new or pre-owned vehicle, knowing what is coolant and its impact on your car is important. This fluid contains an additive that ensures it won’t freeze below 32 degrees Fahrenheit and won’t overheat above 212 degrees Fahrenheit. At Toyota of Louisville, our service center has put together a guide on how to check coolant levels in your vehicle.
When it comes to how to check coolant levels, you won’t have to open the radiator cap to check your levels. Instead, check the markings on the side of the coolant reservoir. If the liquid reaches the “full” marking level, you’re ready to go. If it doesn’t, remove your radiator cap and add coolant, or a 50/50 coolant/water mixture. Read the bottle of your coolant to see if it’s premixed. It’s also a great idea to inspect the hoses connected to your radiator for potential damage or leaks.
If you’ve been adding more liquid to your cooling system, make sure your engine has cooled. Also, don’t open your radiator cap while the engine is hot.
Coolant is much thinner than oil, but thicker than water. If you notice a sludgy appearance in your liquid, it’s recommended you schedule service as soon as possible. Your vehicle probably has an internal gasket leak. This will drain your coolant quickly, increasing the chance of your engine overheating and becoming severely damaged.
Like most fluids in your vehicle, coolant levels will deplete over time. As a result, it’s best you check up on your cooling system every three to six months. This liquid usually looks blue, yellow, green, or red. If it looks brown, or even colorless, it’s time to flush the system and replace your fluid.
